Vitus - History

1930

To witness the birth of the French bike manufacturer you must go back to 1930. In the town of Saint-Étienne, the Ateliers de la Rive manufactured various types of steel tubes, including the Vitus, which impressed frame builders because of its light weight and ruggedness. This placed the firm in direct competition with the British company Reynolds and the Italian manufacturer Columbus.

1978

During the 70’s, Vitus established itself as one of the key suppliers of quality steel tubes thanks mainly due to the “Super Vitus 971” the result of a new build process. In 1978, a landmark year for the brand, Vitus was acquired by the bike manufacturer Bador and was granted a new technology patent that had the effect of improving frame stiffness and strength. A year later, the iconic Vitus 979 frame was launched and was used as the base for top-performing bikes ridden, among others, by Phil Anderson, Graham Jones, Luis Herrera, and Sean Kelly. It was of course Kelly who firmly put the brand on the map with his victories in the classics and the Vuelta. At a time when most manufacturers were still using steel tubes, Vitus had already become the world's leading manufacturer of alloy bikes.

1990

The early 90’s saw the introduction of another material, creating another revolution, the ZX-1, a monoblock frame with an avant-garde design. With its internal cable routing and impressive aerodynamics, it was immortalised by Laurent Fignon in the Grande Boucle. This jewel of modern technology was to pave the way for future carbon design manufacturing.

2008

The later 90’s and early 2000’s were more difficult. The cycling industry was changing fast, and the brand was struggling to keep pace. The brand was bought up by some of the biggest names in French cycling, Look and then Time. Despite several attempts to revive past successes, Vitus stopped trading in 2008.

2009

In 2009, a team of engineers from Northern Ireland who were developing a new bike brand learned that Vitus was for sale. The history and heritage of the name immediately appealed to these passionate engineers. They identified themselves with the vision and values of Vitus and decided to buy the brand, along with the legendary Sean Kelly as brand ambassador.

2011

It was the time for new ambitions, the revival of old bike ranges and the launch of new ones, such as the Nucleus hardtail mountain bike in 2011.

2012

From 2012, the design team’s engineers developed the fully suspended Vitus Escarpe, marking the brand's debut in the world of Enduro racing. The same year saw the launch of the Sean Kelly all-carbon signature bike that was used by the An Post UCI pro team. The close cooperation with, and feedback from, the riders allowed the brand to significantly improve its bikes.

2015

In 2015 the whole Enduro range was completely redesigned using a new damper patent. The wins were to follow in 2016 with Killian Callaghan’s victory in the U21 Enduro World Series U21 and a world DH masters title for Colin Ross in 2018. The Escarpe was even voted “Trail Bike of the year” by MBR magazine.

2016

In 2016, the Nucleus MTB was voted “Bike of the Year”, which it was to repeat for the following 5 years.

2018

In 2018, Vitus began working with Cherie Pridham launching at the same time the Vitus Pro Cycling team that included future stars such as Ed Clancy and Scott Thwaites. The same year saw the launch of the brand’s first e-bike range including the Sommet e-MTB that won MBR magazine’s E-bike of the year with a perfect score of 10 out of 10.

2020

More recently, it was the turn of Rob Warner (the first British winner of the DH World Cup), Joe Smith (DH rider) and Helen Jenkins (former double world triathlon champion) to join the Vitus family, bringing ever more in-depth expertise across the various cycling disciplines.

2021

In 2021 the Escarpe MTB was voted “Trail Bike of the Year” by MBR magazine. The ZX-1 EVO (celebrating its 20th anniversary) road models and the Vitesse EVO were completely redesigned and unanimously praised by Road.cc, cycling weekly and Bike radar. Finally, the Energie EVO CX bike made its first world cup appearance in Belgium with Team Spectra Racing.
