NORTHWAVE - History

Northwave’s history began in the early 1980s in the Italian region of Montebelluna, renowned for its sports shoes manufacturing. Indeed, it was then that Gianni Piva began working as a shoemaker and was contracted by various brands in the industry.

At the end of the 1980s, when the snowboard emerged, Gianni Piva diversified his production and developed a range of boots specifically for snowboarding and then, after an intense phase of Research and Development, decided to sell what he produced under his own brand. He looked for a name and bought Northwave, which at the time was being used by company specialising in wind surfing equipment.
In 1991, the first collection of snowboarding shoes was created and, two years later, the company diversified and developed the first model of MTB shoes.

In 1996, Cross-Country MTB made an entrance at the Olympic Games. It was Northwave’s time to shine as Paola Pezzo won the gold medal in the women’s event. She defended her title and won four years later in Sydney where Northwave presented its very first clothing collection. In 2004, the brand scooped up a new Olympic gold, this time with Norwegian athlete, Gunn-Rita Dahle. They partnered with her to develop a collection of “Skeleton” gloves and jerseys, which has become the absolute go-to for many pilots and racers.

Northwave has also quickly made a name for itself in the Road discipline as, in 1997, Ivan Gotti won the Giro d’Italia wearing a pair of Northwaves. Other significant events include Mario Cipollini’s success in Milan-Sanremo in 2002, Tom Boonen's World Champion title in 2005 – the year when he also won the Tour des Flandres, Paris-Roubaix and two stages of the Tour de France wearing the Aerator model –, or the countless victories of Philippe Gilbert and Fabian Cancellara during the 2011 season.

The brand has developed well-known innovations such as the first Gore-Tex® shoes on the market, the Fahrenheit and the Celsius models, the S.L.W.2 micrometric closure system for a notch by notch adjustment and total opening with one single button, or even the X-Frame vamp, which eliminates all pressure points at the top of the foot. Northwave also developed a great amount of expertise in clothing these last few years, namely through the Kinetic concept (tights inserts) and a large range of base layer items.

Northwave is strengthened by its long heritage that began with shoes and was then reinforced by its lines of clothing, accessories and sunglasses. The brand is composed of technical experts and craftsmen who are propelled forwards, season after season, by their passion for the product.

This team is animated by its pioneer spirit and demands ultimate quality in the products that are designed, developed and tested in Italy by ambassadors such as Benoit Cosnefroy (Road), Maxime Marotte (XC) and even Cécile Ravanel and Cédric Gracia (Enduro) to go beyond perfection and continue pedalling by the sides of all athletes.
