The Caledonia doesn't fit nicely into a box, and that's what Cervelo likes about it. It was dreamed up on their Thursday night rides - routes that often don't have that much to do with "road riding" anymore. When they tried grafting bigger tyres onto the R5 and tightening up the Asperos, a new kind of bike was born.
When they design a bike, they start with their library of tube shapes. These shapes are tubes they have already used on other models and know have different qualities - aerodynamic, stiff, ultra-light, and so on. They assist in fine-tuning a bike faster. For the Caledonia, Cervelo wanted durability, light weight and aerodynamics to be balanced and have chosen a package that meets the performance requirements of this type of road bike.
The Caledonia uses a standard round handlebar, stem and seatpost, giving cyclists the opportunity to build their ultimate bike without compromise. Integrated accessory mounts and hidden wing mounts preserve the bike's sleek lines, so you can ride in pouring rain with lights and a computer and still look good. Because we all know that if it looks fast, it probably is.
Instead of designing multiple bike versions with different position profiles (R5, R-series, etc.) as they have done in the past, they have developed a system that allows a wide range of positions on a single bike while maintaining the aesthetic and functional cleanliness we demand. Modern road cyclists are looking for bikes that can go long distances, set a fast pace, know no limits and offer maximum fun. By using lower modulus carbon fibre in key areas to mitigate the brittleness of high mod fibres, the Caledonia delivers performance, comfort and speed. Oh, and it's suitable for use with a 34mm tyre. Or 31mm with mudguards.
