DEUTER TRANS ALPINE 30 Backpack is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Broken feature: Smartphone pocket There is no quick access to the smartphone pocket anymore. In the current version (August 2018) it has moved deeper inside the backpack but the zip are as close to your back as before. Having a notebook loaded in the hydration system slot will block access to the smartphone pocket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great bike touring pack A roomy and comfortable pack for extended trips. Used it mostly for the rain gear, camera gear and electronics on a 5 day wine tasting trip through Bordeaux, so I could carry the valuables with me while touring and tasting while the dirty laundry was in panniers on the bike. The pack was very comfortable and stable while both walking an riding. Fully loaded it also fits under an airline seat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I put this pack to the test I bought this pack about 3 years ago. In three years, this pack has seen significantly more use than most people could put a pack through in 6 years. I am a Union Electrician so most days I carry home LITERALLY 30 lbs of scrap CAT6 cable in my TransAlpine. As well as my keys, phone charger, batteries, sharp tools. I have majorly over-packed this bag to the point that Ive had to fight and stretch to get the zipper shut. Now, I will say, I broke 2 zippers in the last 3 weeks (which is why I am looking for a new pack) but my God, I cant believe it didnt happen sooner. I pushed this thing to infinity and beyond. The fact that it has held up this long against my abuse is miraculous. I do not drive, I bike everywhere. I bike to do my grocery shopping and routinely carry 20-40 lbs of groceries home in this bag (that is NOT an exaggeration) The one pro and single con in particular I would like to point are these. The straps you use to adjust the height of the pack seem to have worn over time, though I never adjust them. The factory edge on the plastic has a 'sharp' ridge on it. My best guess is that over time the rubbing of the strap against the plastic sawd through the strap. Not all the way through though. So, it is still functional. Not a good enough reason not to buy this pack. The pro, the best pro of allll time. The denier fabric of the bag is incredibly tough. Up until one freak mindless accident (all my fault) it had never sustained any rips. What happened was I put the bag in my washing machine. I decided to put the bag open over the center fin of the washing machine (the part that spins). When it finally went through the spin cycle, the speed of the rotation along with how I hung the bag, tore a millimeter wide by 2 inch long gash at the bottom of the pack. The reason this is a pro is that the hole is over a year old and HAS NEVER gotten any larger. Which in my opinion, is unbelievable. The gash was my honest mistake. I thought that incident was going to be the end for my Trans Alpine but it held up. So when Deuter says high denier or rip-stop, they mean it. So anyways. Just wanted to give an honest review for a good product. Im looking at Osprey packs (which Ive never owned) but Ill most likely purchase another Trans Alpine tonight. I hope my long winded review was helpful to someone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great hiking and biking backpack for 1 to 3 trips! For sure, I value my new Deuter Trans Alpine 30 (2017) for its comfortable airstripes system, which is undoubtedly the best under quite heavy loads over 5-7kg of stuff in the backpack... As well as the durability and overall quality of materials are awesome! Besides, the organizing potential of internal pockets in the new model just overcome the previous one, still saving the reasonable weight of the empty backpack about 1.2kg... However, there are some flaws comparing to Osprey backpacks! And the most annoying You could see on my last two photos of Deuter Trans Alpine side by side with Osprey Momentum - the design of compression straps on mesh side pockets... The way Osprey design it, allows You to tighten the compression straps with ease just on the move, no need to put of the backpack! The way Deuter spoil it, causes a lot of inconvenience trying to tight the strap to the opposite and unnatural for hand, bones and muscles direction on the move ((( I would be glad if Deuter take this into consideration in the future releases of their great backpacks and will make these straps more ergonomically approved, like on Osprey! Despite this flaw, I definitely would recommend Trans Alpine for outdoor adventures, as heavy-loaded with things and still the most comfortable on the back, but for the everyday city usage with less loads - the Osprey Momentum would be my choice and favorite, alas!
