Helmets Technology

Helmets The bike helmet is vital whatever your cycling discipline and level of practice. It aims to guarantee whoever wears it with maximum security and comfort. For a long time, manufacturers have prioritised solidity to avoid all kinds of fractures and they are now lagging behind when it comes to protecting our essential organ, the brain.
Therefore, manufacturers have developed adapted sophisticated technologies based on advanced case studies and simulations, such as crash-tests, for risks that occur, according to the force of impact and their direction. This is how many systems saw the light of day to provide an increasingly higher level of protection.

Fox Fluid

FOX always endeavours to improve the quality of its products and now the American brand has decided to launch its own system to protect helmets from the damage generated by rotational and linear impact. This system is called Fluid in reference to cerebrospinal fluid and mimics the same characteristics as the fluid that protects your brain.

The Fluid technology consists of pads that are fastened strategically inside the helmet and follows the movement of the pilot’s head in the event of a fall. During impact, these pads compress and the fluid disperses internally. This means that there is less force from linear and rotational impact.

mips

The MIPS system (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is a safety technology that is used more and more frequently on Road and MTB bike helmets. The Swedish brand now provides several protection systems.

  • The shell and the internal lining are connected by soft elastomer inserts. In the event of an impact, the shell slides over the Mips layer thus limiting the impact on the cranium and preventing the risk of concussion. Mips helmets efficiently absorb radial impacts and are especially effective against diagonal impacts.

    • MIPS-C2

      MIPS-C2

The MIPS C2 protection system is the most widely available system in the market and is applied to many helmets. On this model, the shell and the inner lining are attached by flexible elastomer ties: upon impact, the shell slides over the MIPS layer to limit the force being transmitted towards the skull and prevent the risk of concussion.

    • MIPS-A1

      MIPS-A1

The MIPS A1 protection system is the brand’s lightest system and is characterised by its small pads. It is generally found in road and cross-country helmets. It is placed between the shell and the liner to avoid reducing the comfort of the cyclist. The MIPS A1 systems consists of two layers that produce hardly any friction and slide over each other to reduce the force of linear and rotational impact.

    • MIPS-E2

      MIPS-E2

The MIPS E2 protection system is specially developed for full-face helmets. In these models, the rider’s head is positioned in the “cap” that has two inner shells, which provide very little friction. During impact, they slide and limit the force of the impact for better absorption.

    • MIPS-F2

      MIPS-F2

The MIPS F2 protection system uses the classic shell with low levels of friction. It is attached to the inner lining using elastomer ties located between the outer shell and the EPS shell. During impact, the ties become deformed to allow the shell to slide over the MIPS layer to limit the transmission of force and, therefore, protect your brain as much as possible.

    MIPS Spherical

The MIPS Spherical protection system is the Swedish manufacturer’s most discreet product. To guarantee both protection and comfort, the technology is integrated between two EPS foam layers with low levels of friction. They are attached by elastomer ties. In the event of a fall, the EPS liners slide one over the other to reduce the force of the linear or rotational impact. For now, this system is only available on Bell Super DH and Giro Aether helmets.

KOROYD

The high precision and unique thermal welding process using Koroyd material gave way to a structure with absorption properties that are both effective and homogeneous. Therefore, upon impact, the core of this material is flattened in a fully controlled manner. This slows the energy from the impact and reduces the final level of trauma.

The latest tests have proven that Koroyd is able to absorb up to 48 times more energy than a standard EPS helmet structure. Thus, helmets are more resistant and provide you with optimal protection when you cycle, with no additional weight and without compromising on effective temperature control.

ODS

ODS is exclusive to the 6D brand, which specialises in motorbike/bicycle helmets. The ODS system (Omni-Directional Suspension) aims to limit the spread of force and energy generated by impact to protect the pilot’s head from potential damage. The helmet shells where this technology has been applied consists of two layers of expanded polystyrene (EPS) – a material that absorbs impact effectively – between which there are multiple integrated mini shock absorbers made of elastomer.

  • These small dampers are characterised by their hourglass shape, which provides multi-directional flexibility. Furthermore, upon radial impact, they compress the two layers of EPS to increase their absorption capacity. Upon diagonal impact, the outer layer, which is attached to the shell, pivots slightly over the inner layer, which is in contact with the head, to disperse the force of the impact as much as possible.

leatt turbine 360

The world-renowned 360° Turbine technology was developed in the Leatt Lab research laboratory and can be found on all Leatt helmets (exclusively). The idea is not only to reduce linear impact in the event of a head-on collision but also to reduce rotation in the case of a high-speed fall.

POC SPIN

The POC brand has built a reputation in the cycling industry thanks to its helmets. The Swedish brand constantly aims to improve the effectiveness of its products and so they created the SPIN protection system (Shearing Pads Inside). This system's purpose is to reduce the force of linear and rotational impact.

  •

SPIN technology consists of pads. These pads replace the lining that is usually found inside a helmet. They are directly in contact with the wearer's head for increased effectiveness without compromising on comfort. During a fall, the pads disperse the force of the impact to protect your brain as much as possible.
