Shoe construction
Shoes are made of an upper, a sole, a tongue, a heel, mesh inserts for breathability and an inner and
outer sole. The whole is equipped with a number of different technologies depending on the level of performance sought, type of riding and regularity. The outsole is usually made from nylon or polyamide, or a composite or fully 100% carbon sole. A full carbon sole will provide the optimal stiffness for power transfer to the pedals and then on to the rest of the drivetrain. Carbon is also lighter than nylon etc. There’s a tread on the outsole to assist when walking and particularly in muddy conditions. Different shoe closure systems The fit is vital to allow you to enjoy your rides in perfect comfort and optimal performance. Though the lace-up system is simple and effective, Velcro straps are practical and fast, whereas the micro-metric buckle is precise. Finally, the Boa wire system ensures a uniform and quite possibly optimal fit. Some models offer a mix of systems for greater customisation of the fit. The different shoe tightening systems will depend directly on the intended use and your budget.
Compatibility with platform or clip-in pedals
MTB shoes are the interface with the pedals. You will find shoes for
platform pedals that are perfect for new cyclists or extreme levels of mountain biking such as DH, Dirt or Endurance, They are also multipurpose suitable for everyday life. There are also clip-in shoes for
automatic pedals that use the two-screw SPD clip-in system for greater efficiency. Finally, and not to be overlooked, mixed shoes are compatible with both automatic and platform pedals.
